Family decision guide

Compare the fit, not just the floor plan.

A beautiful tour can create a strong first impression. A sound decision also looks at the details of daily life.

Person and routine

  • What does a good day look like?
  • Which routines must stay familiar?
  • How much privacy or social activity feels right?
  • Which language, cultural or dietary preferences matter?
  • How close should the setting be to family or clinicians?

Support and capability

  • What help is available, and at what times?
  • What training and supervision do staff receive?
  • How are changes in needs evaluated?
  • Which services require outside providers?
  • What could lead to a transfer or discharge?

Cost and contract

  • What is included in the base rate?
  • How are care-level charges calculated?
  • How often can rates change?
  • What deposits or community fees apply?
  • What are the refund and termination terms?

Safety and accountability

  • Can the facility show its current license?
  • Are required endorsements current?
  • How are concerns and complaints handled?
  • What is the emergency and evacuation plan?
  • Who communicates with the family?

On the tour

Tour questions worth asking.

  1. Who will be the main contact after move-in?
  2. What changes at night and on weekends?
  3. Can we review a sample monthly statement?
  4. How do residents spend a typical afternoon?
  5. How are preferences recorded and shared?
  6. What happens if needs increase?
  7. What is not included in the advertised rate?
  8. May we speak with a current resident or family?

The strongest choice should make sense on an ordinary Tuesday, not only during a tour.
